Noisy scenes in Assembly over remarks against Deshpande

Madhuswamy apologises for remarks after protests by Congress

R.V. Deshpande

BANGALORE: The Legislative Assembly on Wednesday witnessed noisy scenes following remarks made by Janata Dal (United) floor leader J.C. Madhuswamy against R.V. Deshpande (Congress) in connection with the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project.

Making a preliminary submission on an adjournment motion notice on the project, G.V. Srirama Reddy (Communist Party of India - Marxist) referred to an interview with Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd. (NICE) Managing Director Ashok Kheny in a Kannada magazine, in which he had referred to Mr. Deshpande. Mr. Deshpande refuted allegations made by Mr. Kheny against him, and said the Karnataka High Court had cleared him of wrongdoing. The court had levied costs of Rs. 50,000 on the petitioners — Mr. Madhuswamy and Mr. Reddy — for wasting the time of the court. Mr. Madhuswamy and Mr. Reddy had filed a public interest litigation petition seeking a stay on the BMIC project. Mr. Deshpande said the High Court had passed strictures against both members.

Mr. Madhuswamy said Mr. Deshpande had wrongly interpreted the High Court verdict on the issue. The Congress members protested against Mr. Madhuswamy and asked him to withdraw his remarks. Amidst noisy scenes, Speaker Krishna adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

When the House reassembled, M. Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress) and other members of the party demanded an unconditional apology from Mr. Madhuswamy. Mr. Madhuswamy conceded the demand but said Mr. Deshpande should not have responded to Mr. Kheny's allegations.

The Speaker ordered expunction of Mr. Madhuswamy's remarks, and appealed to the members to maintain the decorum of the House.
