Atrocities on Dalits: CPI(M) to stage dharna in Bangalore

Staff Reporter

It will be held in Bangalore on Monday

Bangalore: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise a dharna here on Monday to protest against atrocities on Dalits. Party activists from all over the State will take part in the dharna, which will be staged near the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Maruthi Manpade, a member of the CPI(M) State Secretariat, said more than 20 cases of atrocities had been reported since the formation of the coalition government of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular). He alleged that the Government had not taken steps to prevent atrocities on Dalits or apprehend the perpetrators.

He said that at Chitta village of Basavakalyan taluk in Bidar district, upper-caste Hindus raided Dalit colonies and beat up women and children. At Danapur of Gangavathi taluk in Koppal district, Dalits were not allowed to enter a temple and were reportedly attacked by upper caste Hindus. At Arakera village of Devadurga taluk, parents of a Dalit youth, who married a girl belonging to an upper caste, were stripped, tied to an electricity pole and beaten up, he said.

He said a discussion on the increasing cases of atrocities on Dalits must be taken up during the current session of the Assembly.
