Indian art to make waves on the shores of Europe

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: Over 1,900 Indian art pieces, giving a peek into the country's art, history and civilisation, will soon join an "exclusive" international treasure trove in the heart of Paris.

To be exhibited at the newly inaugurated Quai Branly Museum to highlight the previously not so well known art and civilisation of non-European countries, the handpicked Indian art objects will share space with exhibits selected from across Africa, Asia and Oceania.

"The museum is aimed at improving intercultural dialogue and bringing together cultural diversity, managing to reflect the vision of the world. The museum, consisting of a spectacular group of buildings located in a 40,000 sq. m. area, will display art pieces ranging from tools of everyday life, weapons and jewellery to the most exceptional sculptures. Art pieces from India will find a prominent spot among the treasures being brought here from all over the world,'' said a French Embassy official giving details of what the new museum means for India.

Travelling from India to join the exhibits in Paris will be a bronze mask of Shiva, a bronze figure of Nandi, figures of Mahadev and Parvati, "Pancayatana" figures of Shiv, Vishnu, Devi, Surya and Ganesh, bronze figures of Gorakhnath and Durga. Art lovers will be able to view these objects on the Internet after they are housed in the museum.

The museum is designed as a new type of cultural institution with a dual purpose -- to conserve and exhibit the collections and to stimulate research and instructions. The museum will also run a programme of performing arts events -- theatre, dance, and music -- designed to resonate with the wide range of exhibits on display.
