TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) management has decided to perform `Kalyanotsavam' on August 9 at all the Kalyanamandapams run by it across the State. Naxals set ablaze poclains

MAHABUBNAGAR: Naxalites of CPI (Maoist) set ablaze three poclains at Khanapur camp near Paspula village in Kodreu mandal in the district on Wednesday.

According to information reaching here, two armed naxalites went to the Khanapur camp where the works of Kalwakurthy lift irrigation scheme were going on and woke up the supervisor and torched the three poclains. — Correspondent

Two arrested on theft charge

NALGONDA: The Chityal police on Tuesday arrested two persons - Nakrekanti Sarath Kumar (26) and Sanka Kumar (28)— and recovered 49 tolas of gold ornaments from their possession.

Producing the duo at a press conference on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police M. Diwakar said that the kingpin, Sarath Kumar was involved in 15 house breaking cases in Chityal, Bhongir, Bibinagar, Mothkur, Choutuppal, Kodad and Nandigam. The recovered property was estimated at Rs.4.75 laks.— Staff Reporter

Vidya volunteers to

get regular pay scales

HYDERABAD: Special vidya volunteers in the State will get regular pay scales. Those who have completed their training last month will be given the scales, according to the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union. Union leaders -- B. Mohan Reddy and P.L. Narasimha Reddy said in a statement that this decision was taken following a representation made by the union. — Special Correspondent

Man ends life in lodge

KURNOOL: A person, identified as Maddileti (54), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at a lodge in the city on Wednesday. According to reports, Maddileti, who hailed from Nagavaram in Mahabubnagar district, died in the toilet after consuming the poison. — Staff Reporter

Two held on rape charge

VISAKHAPATNAM: The city police on Wednesday arrested two persons on the charge of gangraping on an orphan.Indirapu Yesepu, 26, of Bhupesh Nagar and Kandali Shankar, 30, of Atchayammapeta, allegedly lured the minor girl, a school drop-out, by promising her shelter and help in getting a job.

The girl was picked up at the railway station on Monday night when she came from Vijayawada to meet one of her relatives at Bhimunipatnam to secure a job. — Staff Reporter

Life term for

killing a woman

ELURU: The city Fast Track Judge I. Ramesh on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to M. Venkata Rao of Nidadavole for killing a woman of the same village. According to the prosecution, Venkata Rao and the victim, a divorcee, were living together. He doused the victim with kerosene and brunt her alive in 1998. Suspicion of fidelity was said to be the cause of murder. — Staff Reporter

Death condoled

BHUBANESWAR: Members and officers of the East Coast Railway Sports Association (ECRSA) condoled the death of former International Badminton player Sanat Misra, at Rail Vihar in Chandrasekharpur on Wednesday.

D. K. Samantray, president, ECRSA, said the Sanat Mishra Memorial Shuttle scholarship would be introduced for upcoming sportspersons this year in memory of the Asiad bronze medallist. S.K. Patra, general secretary, ECRSA, and Chief Public Relations officer also spoke.

Mother, son killed

in accident

Rajahmundry: A 58-year old woman Kovvuri Parvatidevi and her son Tatha Reddy (42) died in a road accident near Morampudi junction in city in the early hours of Wednesday. According to Bommuru police, both mother and son belong to Municipal Colony were going towards Bommuru on a bike and a lorry from Visakhapatnam hit the bike from behind. Parvatidevi died on the spot and Tatha Reddy succumbed to the injuries. - Staff Reporter

calls off protest

KURNOOL: Former mayor and TDP leader Bangi Ananthaiah called off his six-month-old protest here on Wednesday as the National Highways authorities started the road repair work at C. Camp Centre. Mr. Ananthaiah staged a demonstration and last time he pledged to sport half-shaven head until the road was repaired. The half-shaven head roused curiosity wherever he went in the State. Even at the TDP Mahanadu meet in Rajahmundry, the half-shaven head attracted the attention of the participants. An amount of Rs. 9 lakhs was sanctioned for laying BT road temporarily around the traffic island and a permanent road would be laid later. The Municipal Corporation, which constructed the traffic island to install the statue of Rajiv Gandhi dug up the road and left it half-finished.-Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The general body meeting of Kurnool Medical College Old Students Association will be held at Clinical Lecture Gallery on the college campus on June 24 at 11 a.m., according to a press note by president Y. Training for Sanskrit teachers

TIRUPATI: Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, in association with Samskruta Bharati, is conducting a 10-day refresher programme for trainers who will be entrusted the task of holding spoken Sanskrit camps among the general public. At the inaugural session here on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor of Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Sridhar Vasishta, compared the divine language with Greek and Latin in terms of its age and use in scriptures. RSVP Vice-Chancellor Harekrishna Sathapathy, presided over the meet and listed out the plans to make Sanskrit accessible to all. 80 trainers are undergoing training at the programme.- Staff Reporter

Scholarships

KURNOOL: Supporters of AISF took out a rally and staged a demonstration at Social Welfare office here on Wednesday urging Government to release scholarships to all students. AISF leaders -- Hussain, Laxminarayana Reddy and Lenin -- said the Government was not allotting sufficient amount for the education of the poor students.

Last year about 75 per cent of the students were given scholarships while the rest were not sanctioned.

They said the Government could make money available for the poor students if irregularities were checked in one irrigation project.

They said the agitation would be intensified. - Staff Reporter

NBT to organise

mobile book exhibition

KURNOOL: National Book Trust of India (NBT) will organise a mobile book exhibition in the city on June 22 and 23. The NBT bus will be parked at the collectorate between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and at the Cole's College between 5 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

The NBT is offering a discount of 10 per cent on all purchases, according to a press note by Jaihind Raj and Bundalal.- Staff Reporter
