NEW DELHI: Describing the general sanitary conditions in and around Connaught Place as very poor and very unhygienic, Delhi Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia said he was appalled by the situation prevailing in the Inner Circle and Palika Bazar and other parts of the Capital's premier marketing hub. Dr. Walia, who undertook a round of areas in and around Connaught Place and also Palika Bazar on Tuesday, instructed the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairperson Sindhushree Khullar to prepare an action plan to revive the past glory of Connaught Place. Dr. Walia said he was surprised and shocked to see accumulation of garbage at various places in the Inner Circle and Palika Bazar. Parking in the Inner Circle was very disorganised as vehicles were parked on the main carriageway causing inconvenience to the common man including motorists. The shopkeepers inside Palika Bazar were annoyed over the prevailing sanitation situation, frequent breakdown of electricity supply and water logging in toilets. Apart from this, it was also found that curbstones in front of Regal and Rivoli cinemas were broken. Dr. Walia stressed the need for giving a clean look to the entire Connaught Place area and restore its past glory. He said he was surprised to see potholes on two important roads -- Mother Teresa Road and Sardar Patel Marg. "Even the general condition of roads and footpaths was far from satisfactory."
