Candidates think twice before launching poll campaign

Staff Reporter

They await final judgment from court before opening their coffers

ADILABAD: Though candidates in the panchayat raj elections seem to prefer taking the plunge straight away as the withdrawals of nominations drew to a close on Wednesday, their approach towards serious kind of campaign involving spending of money was rather `guarded'. They want to wait till a final word on the conduct of elections is pronounced by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday before opening the `coffers'.

Rathod Ramesh, a former MLA from Khanapur and now Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) candidate for the Asifabad Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC), summed it up like this: "We have to wait till the court gives its decision. Any `serious' campaigning at this juncture could yield nothing if the court upholds the decision of the single-judge Bench."

Firm on contesting

Geeta Chopade, an independent candidate for Indervelli ZPTC, supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party, was determined to contest even if it means filing nominations once again in the event of the High Court scrapping the elections. However, on the question of launching campaign before the High Court judgment she said: "Ghar ja ke sochenge. (will decide after reaching home)."

A. Arvind Naik, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate from Khanapur ZPTC said: "Phirna to padta hai (I have to move around)," in response to a question on campaign before the court decision. "Election ho ya na ho main logon se to milunga (irrespective of elections I will meet people)," he added.

`No worry'

Pendency of the final decision in the High Court does not worry Gavvala Srikanth, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Gudihatnoor ZPTC. He says his party will go ahead with the campaign from Thursday morning.
