There is `discontentment' among women legislators over not getting proper representation

  • The Government to set up 136 pre-university colleges and 365 higher secondary schools in the State this year
  • Court directions on local body elections to be complied with

HASSAN: Proper representation will be given to women during a full-fledged expansion of the Cabinet, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said. He was reacting to the "discontentment" among women legislators for not having been provided proper representation in the second phase of Cabinet expansion.

Mr. Kumaraswamy visited Hassan on Tuesday to launch development programmes including laying foundation stones for four pre-university colleges and one Government first-grade college for women.

To a query, he said that there was no discontentment among men in the party, and that the expansion would not create any problem to the coalition Government.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Government would comply with the directions issued by the court with regard to local body elections.

Addressing a gathering at Chippinakatte Government High School grounds, he said that the Government had decided to set up 136 pre-university colleges and 365 higher secondary schools in the State during the year to help children of economically backward classes.

"With private institutions collecting huge donations and exorbitant fee, it has become difficult for poor students to continue their education. Many will be forced to discontinue their studies owing to lack of financial support. In view of this, it has been decided to establish more Government colleges in the State," he said.

In view of the problems being faced by children from the Backward Classes and minorities, Mr. Revanna had urged the Government to set up few

junior and first grade colleges in the district, he said. Mr. Kumaraswamy, who also launched the work on Tiptur-Dudda and

    Halebeed-Hassan-Arkalgud-Piriyapatna-Kannanur State Highway, said that

He had sanctioned Rs. 3.18 crore for construction of a 72- km road.

Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankara Murthy, who participated in the function, said that Karnataka Development Front Government had given highest priority to education. Its dream was to reach education to every child, he said.

    Quality of education

The quality of education in Government schools had improved in recent years, he said.

Newly inducted Ministers H.D. Revanna, and H.K. Kumaraswamy; and Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, Shashidhara Prasad, were present on the occasion.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a first-grade Government college in his native village of Paduvalahippe in Holenarsipur taluk.
