NEW DELHI: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited on Tuesday rolled out its new state-of-the-art CDMA 2000 lx network for mobile services in the Capital with attractive tariff packages. The Rs.300-crore project with 4 lakh lines and 222 high-capacity transmission towers, including 12 in Delhi Metro, promises excellent coverage across the city. Launching the service, MTNL (Delhi) Executive Director A.K. Arora said the improved Garuda service that comes with good quality handsets would be available to post-paid subscribers and soon it would be open for pre-paid subscribers also. The special feature of the new network was its capacity to provide high-speed Internet access where only user charges of Rs.2 per mega byte (MB) were levied. There would be no rental on data, he added. MTNL has come out with two promotional plans -- Economy and Super-Saver -- for the first 15 months where it has provided with facility to pay various fees and charges in instalments besides giving some free calls. Interestingly, existing MTNL landline subscribers getting new Garuda connections will get the bonanza of unlimited free local calls to one fixed-line number for one year and unlimited free local SMS to any network for one year. The outgoing call rate for the economy plan is 40 paise (own network) and 60 paise (other network), while for super saver plan it is 30 paise (own network) and 40 paise (other network). Similarly, SMS charges are 50 paise (local), Re.1 (national) and Rs.2.50 (international). There are also other attractive plans for subscribers. Those with the old Garuda connection can also get new connection by surrendering their old numbers. However, they will not be able to retain the old number. "At present, these subscribers will have to surrender their old phones and apply afresh for the new service."
