CHENNAI: It is no longer a pipe dream for Avadi residents. The municipality has begun receiving water on Wednesday through the pipeline, an Rs.4.5 crore project pending almost for five years. Metrowater started the water supply through the pipeline, which runs for six kms from Ambattur OT to Avadi near Murugappa Polytechnic College, on Wednesday. Poonamallee MLA, D.Sudarsanam, inaugurated the project. Avadi will receive around 20 lakh litres of water daily (LLD) through the pipeline. This will be taken to three overhead tanks at Thirumulaivoyal, Avadi and Pattabiram and distributed through 413 public fountains by the municipality. A Metrowater official said that the board has taken over the water supply from Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. A part of the treated water conveyed from Redhills reservoir to south Chennai would be transmitted to Avadi through an intersection pipeline at Ambattur OT, he said. On the present water supply, Avadi Municipal chairman, S.M. Nasar said that area has a water demand of 2 crore LLD for a population of 2.20 lakh. The local body had also been managing supply by drawing water from 470 borewells and 95 mini power pumps, he added. Metrowater also planned to increase the water supply to the municipality through lorries. An Avadi municipal official said that at present, 40 per cent of the area's water demand was being met. The supply would be further increased through a Rs. 40 crore project by constructing six more overhead tanks and a ground level reservoir of 22 lakh litre capacity. This would provide 60 LLD of water.
