Do not let shyness affect your career

Special Correspondent

Those who speak out create the right impression among bosses

  • A shy person tends to stutter and mumble and creates a poor impression
  • Senior managers prefer to interact with employees who communicate clearly
  • Shy persons should make a list of their skills and past accomplishments

Bangalore: Some people are naturally shy; others because of certain negative experiences they faced when being outspoken.

"Getting over shyness has a lot to do with building better self-esteem and having enough confidence in your own abilities and believing you have the right to be heard," says corporate trainer G. Chandrasekhar, former faculty of a B-school.

Bringing them "out of their shells" helps them get on the fast track career-wise. Senior managers prefer to interact with employees who communicate clearly, with the right amount of respect.

A person gripped with shyness starts stuttering and mumbling and generally makes a poor impression in front of others. This can happen during a job interview, almost always spoiling the chances of being recruited.

Anything from an unhappy childhood to being unfairly treated in school may make some people become too shy and withdrawn. They rarely speak out at meetings and always occupy the last row. As if telling the world "I don't really matter and neither do my opinions."

Therapists and trainers encourage such persons to make a list of their skills and past accomplishments, starting from school. Backbenchers may do well in Parliament but not in the corporate world.
