KOCHI: The city corporation has decided not to seek external help for preparing a city development plan (CDP). Instead, expertise of its staff will be utilised for the work. The plan is being prepared for seeking financial assistance from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. A meeting of heads of various departments of the corporation and select councillors, convened by Mayor Mercy Williams and attended by Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar, on Wednesday decided to prepare the plan on a war footing. The corporation has decided to make a former engineer of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) the coordinator of the plan preparation. A panel of experts from various sectors will be formed for the preparation of the plan on Thursday. The panel will give inputs on various sectors such as sewerage, environment, sanitation, rehabilitation of the urban poor and heritage, Mayor Mercy Williams said. The panel will meet civic administrators at the Mayor's chamber at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Wednesday's meeting decided that office and other infrastructure available at the corporation office at Kacheripady would be made use of for preparing the plan. The corporation will seek service of external agencies only at the time of preparation of detailed project reports. The civic body plans to use the inputs from a master plan for preparing the CDP, Ms. Williams said. A meeting of the Mayors of Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, convened by Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty in the capital on Monday, decided to prepare the plan within 45 days.
Sharing of information
The Kochi Corporation has taken up the issue of the Kerala Water Authority `refusing to share water-use data' in the city with the Minister of Water Resources. The authority had refused to share the data with a professional agency appointed by the corporation. The Minister has assured the civic body that the issue will be discussed at a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on July 1, Ms. Williams said.
