Five Bangladeshi nationals arrested

NEW DELHI: Five young Bangladesh nationals have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police for their alleged involvement in burglaries. The police claim to have recovered a country-made pistol and stolen articles worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs from their possession.

In the wake of a spate of burglary cases in government quarters at Lodhi Colony, Sarojini Nagar, Sadiq Nagar and Sarita Vihar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla had recently directed the Special Staff to track down the culprits.

Accordingly, a team led by Inspector Rajender Singh zeroed in on some suspects and learnt that they would gather near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday to plan a burglary.

The police laid a trap and arrested five of them, identified as Masoom, Akram, Sarik-Ul, Safiq-Ul and Mohammad Kamal, all residents of Bangladesh.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in at least 14 cases. They were living at Seemapuri and Sarai Kale Khan. At their instance, the police allegedly recovered stolen television, camera, jewellery and other articles.

According to the police, Masoom was the gang leader. He had earlier been arrested for his alleged involvement in about 50 cases of burglary and was released from jail about two months ago. His accomplice, Akram, had been convicted in four cases for which he spent two years in jail. Safiq has also been convicted in two cases.

The accused used to send most of the stolen articles to their relatives in Bangladesh through their agents operating on the Indo-Bangladesh border.

NEW DELHI: Five people have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police on charges of their involvement in robbery cases.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Lakhan, Karan, Kuttan, Kalu and Anil, were arrested near Mathura Road on Tuesday. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to their involvement in at least 14 cases. Four of them are relatives and are residents of Etah in Uttar Pradesh. They had recently shifted their base to the Capital after the local police mounted pressure on them.

Mobile phone

thieves nabbed

NEW DELHI: Two alleged mobile phone thieves were arrested at Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi. The police claim to have recovered nine stolen mobile phones from them.

Those arrested have been identified as Guddu and Manoj. During interrogation, they allegedly disclosed that they used to steal mobile phones at wine shops and busy markets.

SFI ends strike

NEW DELHI: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) ended its 48-hour hunger strike outside the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor's Office on Wednesday. The students have been protesting against the increase in fees for science courses in various colleges.

"The University has assured us that a committee will be formed to examine the issue. The authorities have also assured us that they will try and convince various college Principals to have double shifts so that there is an increase in the number of seats,'' said SFI State joint secretary Robert.
