KSRTC will introduce more Volvo services, says Minister

Buses will be run to areas of the State where roads are in good condition

BANGALORE: Transport Minister N. Cheluvaraya Swamy said here on Thursday that the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) would introduce Volvo bus services to many parts of the State where roads were in good condition.

Speaking after launching the KSRTC's Volvo services between Bangalore and Shimoga, Mr. Cheluvaraya Swamy said Volvo services had received patronage from the public, and the corporation could run more such services.

He said the State transport undertakings had taken up an expansion programme. Over 2,500 new routes would be introduced by the four corporations in the current financial year, including 1,800 routes by the KSRTC.

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa and Minister for Sports and Youth Services Alkod Hanumanthappa were present.

Volvo services will leave Bangalore at 10 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. to reach Shimoga at 3.30 p.m. and 5 a.m., respectively. In the return direction, they will leave Shimoga at 2 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. to reach Bangalore at 7.30 p.m. and 5 a.m., respectively.

For the city and suburban services of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, 25 Volvo buses are being used, and their number is to be doubled by end of this year.
