Shortcomings in new Bill, says Basheer

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The former Education Minister and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader E.T. Mohammed Basheer has said that if the shortcomings in the Bill on self-financing colleges are not corrected, it will lead to the higher education sector in the State falling into a crisis.

At a meet-the-press programme here on Thursday, he said that many of the provisions in the Bill would possibly get misinterpreted.

As of now, the fee structure for merit quota admissions to the self-financing professional colleges is on par with the fee at Government colleges. The new Bill had no provision to guarantee this, he pointed out. Instead a fee regulatory committee would decide the fee structure based on the standards of each college. This would totally demolish the Government college fee structure for merit admissions in the self-financing colleges, Mr. Basheer said.

He said that given the situation he was even constrained to allege whether the new Bill had some underhand understanding between the Government and the managements of self-financing colleges. That the Government lawyer did not appear in court on this matter should also be seen as a serious issue.

On the defeat suffered by the IUML in the Assembly elections, he said that it had been grossly exaggerated.
