CHENNAI : Food Minister E.V.Velu on Thursday contested former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's claim that cooperative banks were not given funds to disburse loans and said the DMK government had disbursed more loans that the AIADMK government.

Fresh loans were being given as and when applications were received, he said.

In a statement he said the DMK government had given fresh loans amounting to Rs.7.2 crore through the Kumbakonam Cooperative Bank and Rs.58.86 lakh through the Thanjavur Cooperative Bank. Mr.Velu denied allegations that rice was not available at Rs.2 a kg in PDS outlets.

He wanted Ms. Jayalalithaa to name a Minister involved in diverting rice meant for supply for PDS. The Minister also denied that there was a breakdown of law and order in the State.
