University can spare 25 acres for IT Park: Vice-Chancellor

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University can spare 25 acres of land for the proposed information technology (IT) park in Madurai and the particulars will be provided to the district administration, if necessary, Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said on Wednesday.

He told The Hindu that a similar view was expressed to the district officials, who inspected the `illegal sand quarrying' taking place on the land belonging to the university.

The District Collector, T. Udhayachandran, inspected the university land (on the southern side of the railway track) where "it was dug up illegally for sand quarrying" and ordered the cancellation of licence (for quarrying elsewhere) of a private individual involved in exploiting it.

Dr. Maruthamuthu said the Collector visited the spot based on complaints that damage had been done to nearly 200 acres of the University land.

"The issue of land for IT park was broached then by a few district officials and I informed them of our willingness to spare 25 acres. A decision will be taken by the Syndicate whenever it has to be taken," the Vice-Chancellor said.
