Security clearance for Jet Airways chief Goyal

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : A day after the Rs.2,300 crore Jet-Sahara deal collapsed, the Union Home Ministry on Thursday gave security clearance to Naresh Goyal, Jet Airways Chairman, who was to head the new corporate entity if the merger had come through.

Official sources said the enquiry against Mr. Goyal was conducted following a reference made by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in February this year. Sources said Mr. Goyal's antecedents and financial set-up of the company werechecked out and nothing adverse was found.

Officials said the Government was not bound by any kind of agreement entered into by the two companies and the fact that the deadline for Jet-Sahara deal expired on Wednesday midnight had nothing to do with the Government procedure for clearing Mr. Goyal.

Civil Aviation Ministry informed

This is the second time Mr. Goyal has been given security clearance by the Home Ministry, the first was in October 2004 when the board of Jet Airways was reconstituted.

A week ago the Government had given clearance to four directors-to-be on the Jet-Sahara Board in the post-merger scenario. Sources said the Civil Aviation Ministry had been informed of the decision regarding Mr. Goyal.
