BSP secretary murdered

Staff Reporter

Satyavelu was stabbed in the abdomen

  • Police say a rival gang committed the murder
  • There were several criminal cases against Satyavelu

BANGALORE: Secretary of the Bangalore city unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party Satyavelu (38) was murdered by an armed gang in Fraser Town police station limits here on Wednesday night.

Satyavelu's brother V. Velu has lodged a complaint with the Fraser Town police that a police inspector and some underworld elements had got his brother eliminated by a hired gang.

The police said Satyavelu, a resident of Bagalur Layout, had come to his sister's house on Moore's Road in Fraser Town. Around 11.30 p.m. six men, who came in a van, chased and stabbed him in the abdomen, killing him instantaneously.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) P. Muniswamy told The Hindu that Satyavelu was murdered by a rival group. Referring to V. Velu's complaint that the former Banaswadi inspector Siddappa was involved in the killing, Mr. Muniswamy said they were yet to ascertain whether the police official had a role in the murder.

It is alleged that while he was Banaswadi inspector, Mr. Siddappa had colluded with Satyavelu's rival group and booked false cases against him and his associates. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Fraser Town sub-division), Victor S. D'Souza said there were several criminal cases against Satyavelu and his brother.

Satyavelu was earlier involved in chain snatching, robbery and assault cases in Banaswadi and Kadugondanahalli police stations, he said.

As Banaswadi inspector Mr. Siddappa had taken stern measures to check the illegal activities of Satyavelu and his associates, who were also into land grabbing, Mr. D'Souza said. The attack on Satyavelu had nothing to do with his association with the BSP and it was a fallout of gang rivalry. A group led by Sridhar and Mathew was suspected to have killed Satyavelu, Mr. D'Souza said.

Meanwhile, BSP activists on Thursday staged a demonstration at Bowring Hospital, where Satyavelu's body was kept, demanding action against Mr. Siddappa.
