HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice T. Meena Kumari and Justice N. V. Ramana on Thursday directed the police to file affidavit and report on the allegations that they had captured top Maoist leader Sudhakar and confined him illegally. The court was dealing with a writ petition filed by Saraswatamma, mother of Sudhakar, who alleged that the police had detained her son illegally and caused him harm. She sought a direction to the police to produce her son before the court. Sudhakar is a State committee member of CPI (Maoist) and secretary of Andhra-Orissa Border (AOB) committee. Counsel appearing for the Government said the Vizianagaram district police had said that he was not in their custody. The bench directed the authorities to file their report to this effect and adjourned the matter for Friday. Vizianagaram Correspondent adds: The Maoist leader escaped minutes before an exchange of fire between his party cadre and the police near Yerrasamanthavalasa in Makkuva mandal on Wednesday morning, informed sources said. The AOB secretary had sent a word through a courier to his niece Kolli Uma Devi and her husband Kolli Krishna Murty, an Assistant Engineer, seeking a family get-together. Disguising himself as an electrical lineman and carrying a wire bundle in his hand, Sudhakar reached Thimadapakalu where the couple waited for him. But, the police got a tip-off about his presence. Sudhakar managed to leave the place before a police party reached the spot. However, there was an exchange of fire with the Maoists present in nearby huts but none was injured.
