Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: Vice-president of the Karnataka State Association of Physically Handicapped persons Ghanshyam Bhandage on Friday criticised the State Government's "indifferent" attitude towards persons with disabilities. Addressing presspersons here, he demanded implementation of The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 in toto.
He said the Act envisages five per cent reservation for people with disabilities in government jobs but listed them 19th in order. Thus, if there are 18 vacancies to be filled in a government department, the candidate with disabilities will never get an opportunity. The Act serves little purpose in such situations, he said. According to the Act, the government should give a monthly unemployment allowance of Rs. 1,400 to people with disabilities, which is also not being implemented. There were more than 20 lakh people in the State with disabilities, Mr. Bhandage said and added reservation for this section was a must, he said.
