CAB polls: Left Front not to interfere

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: The ruling Left Front has decided not to interfere in matters related to the coming elections to the post of president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

It authorised Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Sports Minister Subash Chakravarty "to take appropriate steps" to protect the State's interests in matters related to the sport, Left Front chairman Biman Bose said on Friday.

The CAB's state of affairs, particularly in the context of the coming elections, was discussed at a meeting of the Left Front.

Mr. Bhattacharjee, who had said it would be advisable that its president Jagmohan Dalmiya does not seek re-election, made his views known.

Regretting the fact that no international matches are scheduled at Eden Gardens in the next two years, Mr. Bose said the Left Front could not remain a spectator to the state of affairs. It was concerned over "Eden Gardens going out of the orbit of cricketing activities."

Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu said the future of cricket in the State was being adversely affected and "we have asked the Chief Minister and the Sports Minister to do the needful."
