Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Stop this witch-hunt" (June 23). The law-enforcing agencies in India swing between the two extremes of enormous activism and deplorable inaction in cases involving high-profile personalities. In the Rahul Mahajan episode, besides his family, all those associated in the battle to save the dying man are being traumatised. It is hoped that the law will be allowed to take its course, keeping in mind human sensibilities, and that the media will stop impairing law-abiding citizens' self-esteem.
M.S. Rajasekaran,
The editorial drives home the message that every incident is politicised. The media clearly overstepped their role and digressed from the main issue.
V.R. Vithur Mudhaliar,
K.K. Cherian,
Although there is no denying that the Rahul Mahajan case has been excessively sensationalised by the media and that he is a victim of drug abuse who needs to be rehabilitated, the contention that he was under intense emotional stress is unacceptable. Media reports said that a party was held at his residence where champagne was also purportedly used. The police have been rightly accused of witch-hunting but the fact remains that the guilty should be punished. Rahul should be treated as any other suspect.
Puneet Walia,
