Development vs. nature

I want to convey my appreciation for your clear stand on the Athirapilly project (editorial "Rainforests should be forever," June 20). It is time we began a discussion on what development is. Our present development model will continue to depend on vast quantities of material and energy throughput. A sustainable alternative requires us to question the fundamental assumptions and aspirations we hold on economic development.

Manu V. Mathai,
Newark, Delaware

It is shocking that despite the alarming threat to environment and different species facing extinction, our leaders undertake projects in the name of development. It is because of the vested interests of politicians and bureaucrats that they get sanction. We the people must join hands to protect our environment. Celebrating environment day and reading/writing articles on environment alone will not help.

Amit Babalal Nahar,
Pune

The Hindu should remain committed to environmental issues. The speed with which forests are disappearing is alarming. This will affect local economies, regional ecosystems, and continuity of life around rivers.

Rivers are born in forests and they are the source of life on the planet. How much can we afford to lose in the name of development? Who will take care of natural wealth if the Government doesn't?

Imran Siddiqui,
Dubai

The editorial on the Western Ghats was really good. We would also appreciate The Hindu throwing the spotlight on the proposed coal-based thermal project at Tadari in Uttara Kannada and super thermal project in Padubidri in Dakshina Kannada districts. Enough damage has been done to coastal Karnataka by starting a nuclear project at Karwar and two dams in Uttara Kannada district.

N. Prakash & Saroja Chiguru,
Mangalore
