Corrections and Clarifications

  • The text in "France and l'affaire Dreyfus revisited" (Editorial page, June 23, 2006) said: "`The Dreyfus case illustrates what can happen when a democracy becomes a tyranny. But the courage of Dreyfus' supporters, especially men like Bernard Lazare, the first to take up cudgels against the War Council that condemned Dreyfus, Leon Blum, Jean Jaures or Emile Zola, whose open letter to the French president on January 13, 1989, in the form of a front page editorial against the army's despicable manoeuvring entitled J'Accuse ... ! in the newspaper L'Aurore unleashed a furore in the western world, stands out as an example of how democratic forces can win back their democratic rights,' said Vincent Duclert, a renowned historian who has just published a remarkable biography of Alfred Dreyfus." It was not January 13, 1989 — a typographical error. The correct date should have been January 13, 1898, as a few readers have pointed out.

  • In The Guardian report "Song-stuck-in-your-head phenomenon" (Op-Ed, June 23, 2006), the sentence in the text and the info-box was: "Or perhaps we simply have to remember the main rule of the human-earworm relationship: treated earworms go away in one day, untreated earworms in 24 hours." A reader wondered what the difference was between a day and 24 hours. The Readers' Editor, The Guardian, clarifies: "I think that's the point, isn't it. They are the same. It doesn't make any difference whether they are `treated' or not."

  • It should have been "Dow Jones USA" and not the "Dow Jones South Korea Index", says a reader. The text in the Guardian report "New elite of super-rich in developing nations" (Op-Ed, June 22, 2006) had made a reference to the Dow Jones South Korea Index having gained 55 per cent in 2005. Sybille Reitz, Dow Jones & Company, clarifies that Dow Jones Indexes includes 48 countries in its world index family and that South Korea is among these countries. Also, the Readers' Editor, The Guardian, quoting the City Editor, The Guardian, says Dow Jones runs a series of international indices. Dow Jones is based in the U.S., but runs the Dow Jones South Korea index based on Korean stocks. It does this for stock markets all over the world as do all the main index providers including FTSE International, he adds. So, no, it is not an error!

  • A few readers have pointed out that the heading of the report "Stenos Guild recruits 6,000 for Dubai jobs" (Chennai city, June 22, 2006, page 4) was incorrect. As the text said, the ETA Ascon Ltd., Dubai, UAE, was recruiting 6,000 people from India for various jobs in Dubai, and the Stenographers' Guild was one of the agencies imparting technical and human resource skills to the recruits.
