NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Bihar Chief Secretary and the Inspector-General, Prisons, to submit a report on the health of undertrial prisoner Mohammad Shahabuddin, now lodged in the Siwan Jail. The Commission's action comes in the wake of a petition presented to its chairman A. S. Anand, complaining of Mr. Shahabuddin's poor health and denial of proper treatment by jail officials. The petition alleged that on the night of May 10, the police and jail authorities entered his cell and hit him with rifle butt, resulting in spinal injuries. His condition worsened after he was shifted to the Siwan jail and he was in need of specialised treatment by a neurosurgeon, the petition said.
