Nikitha claims junior title

BANGALORE: S.R. Nikitha scored an exciting 5-11, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 12-10 victory over the gritty Shamika V. Desai to claim the junior girls' singles title in the Canara Union State-ranking table tennis championship here on Friday.

After a sluggish start, Nikitha found her touch in the fourth game and took control of the tie with a judicious mix of attack and defence. In the decider, she warded off a late surge from her rival and held her nerve to win on extra points.

However, Shamika had the consolation of winning the women's singles title with a hard fought 11-9, 11-4, 12-10, 4-11, 8-11, 11-7 win over R. Madhuri in the final.

In the sub-juniors section, Bhavana V. Murthy won the girls' title by beating N. Poojitha 4-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 and V.P. Charan bagged the boys' title with a 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 win over P. Puneeth. Deepak Dev, who had won the cadet singles title on Thursday, completed a fine double when he partnered Vishwas Patel to bag the non-medaillists' doubles title.

Sub-junior boys' singles final: V.P. Charan bt P. Puneeth 11-7, 11-9, 11-7. Semifinals: P. Pimeeth bt Deepak Dev 12-10, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4; V.P. Charan bt Vedant M. Urs 11-6, 11-5, 11-9.

Junior girls singles final: S.R. Nikitha bt Shamika V. Desai 5-11, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 12-10.

Sub-junior girls singles final: Bhavana V. Murthy bt N. Poojitha 4-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5. Semifinals: Bhavana V. Murthy bt Shubashree 11-4, 11-6, 11-4; N. Poojitha bt Anjali Dinak 11-4, 11-7, 11-4.

Women's singles final: Shamika V. Desai bt R. Madhuri 11-9, 11-4, 12-10, 4-11, 8-11, 11-7.

Semifinals: Shamika V. Desai bt N. Poojitha 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 13-11; R. Madhuri bt S.R. Nikitha 11-4, 8-11, 6-11, 14-13, 11-8, 11-9.

Non-medallist doubles final: Deepak Dev/Vishwas Patel bt Govind Narayan/T.K. Prasad 11-7, 11-13, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3.
