25 textile parks planned before 2007, says Elangovan

CHENNAI: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan on Friday said the Centre proposed to set up 25 integrated textile parks in the country before 2007 with an investment of Rs. 18,500 crore, providing employment opportunities to half a million people.

Participating in a workshop on "New communication strategies," organised by the Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP) here, he said nine integrated textile parks had already been cleared.

The investment in the textile sector during 2005-06 was Rs. 30,000 crore. It would generate 12 million jobs by 2010.

To induct modern technology, the Centre had strengthened and augmented the technology upgradation fund scheme. It attracted 5,031 applications till March this year, involving an investment of Rs. 43,293 crore.

Handloom clusters

In the last financial year, 20 handloom clusters were set up at a cost of Rs. 50 crore. The scheme was being extended to add another 100 clusters. A scheme on the lines of technology upgradation fund scheme would be introduced in the handloom sector to provide interest subsidy on term loans.

K.S. Dhatwalia, Deputy Director-General, Directorate of Field Publicity, New Delhi, said the department would organise public information campaigns throughout the country to propagate the Centre's policies and programmes.

In his welcome address, M.K. Santhanam, Director, DFP, said the department was organising multi-media campaigns throughout the State to make the people aware of government programmes.
