DINDIGUL: `Bright smiles, bright futures' — a national oral health programme conducted by the district unit of Indian Dental Association at Gandhiji Memorial Middle School here on Friday taught young children aged between six and 12 how to brush their teeth and other aspects of oral hygiene.

According to the organisers, the objective of the programme, aimed to cover 50,000 children in the district, was to spread an awareness of healthcare at a young age. Schoolchildren were chosen as ambassadors to popularise and familiarise health care "as anything taught to them would be spread effectively to their family members and neighbours."

The dentists not only demonstrated good dental care practices among children but also insisted on enlightening teachers and parents.

Parents' duty

The main reason for insisting parental involvement was that only then the training given at schools could be reinforced at home, the organisers said. The parents' role in the upbringing of a child was indispensable one. Love, security and family support results in better quality of life in its adulthood. It was the duty of parents and teachers to ensure a `bright smile and bright future' for the children, the speakers said.

Dentists Tulsidar, G. Radhakrishnan and R.M.K.R.K. Sudharson gave tips on how to brush the teeth properly and about oral hygiene. Toothbrush and toothpaste were given to participants. District Elementary Education Officer M.N. Murugesan inaugurated the programme.
