Naxals blast MPP office

MAHBUBNAGAR: Naxalites blasted a building housing the Mandal Praja Parishad office at Koderu, about 90 km from here, at 8.15 p.m. on Friday.

According to reports, a group of armed naxalites blasted the building using gelatine sticks. - Correspondent

Death roll in Polkampally case up

MAHABUBNAGAR: The death roll in Polkampally village case, where 13 persons were burnt alive, has gone up to 14 with the death of Raju, 5, while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad on Thursday night.

It may be recalled that a dispute over a piece of land between two families led to the incident. The police had already arrested some 62 persons, including village sarpanch Kousalyamma, in this regard. - Correspondent

Three naxals held, ammunition seized

KARIMNAGAR: The Mahadevpur police on Friday arrested three militants belonging to the CPI-ML Praja Pratighatana group and recovered 30 rounds of ammunition from their possession near Peddampallivagu.

Kumari Satyam, 23, M. Durgam, 22, and K. Anjaiah, 30, all residents of Palemala village of Mahadevpur mandal, were arrested during combing operation. The accused persons reportedly confessed to have procured the ammunition with a view to handing it over to dalam commander Anil. - Staff Reporter

Naxalite surrenders

ADILABAD: Batti Rajanna alias Prabhakar, 28, commander of Indervelli dalam of the CPI(Maoist) surrendered on Friday citing ill-health as the reason. He was involved in 16 offences, which included six murders and three exchanges of fire besides a few cases of arson.

Producing him at a press conference, Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela said that counselling of Rajanna's relatives resulted in his surrender.

Police file report on Maoist leader

VIZIANAGARAM: Following a directive from the Division Bench of the High Court, Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann has filed a report that the CPI (Maoist) leader Sudhakar is not in police custody.

Two other persons - Kolli Krishna Murty and his wife Kolli Uma Devi - who were arrested at Yerrasamanthavalasa on Wednesday were produced in Salur court on Thursday morning. The AK-47 rifle recovered from the area was also deposited. The couple was remanded to 14 days judicial custody, Mr. Mann said on Friday. - Correspondent

Last date extended

VISAKHAPATNAM: The last date for submitting application forms for admission to M.Sc. (nano science), M.Sc. (tech) (VLSI) and M.Sc. (tech) (digital signal processing and embedded system design), introduced by Andhra University this year has been extended from June 24 to 30, according to a press release from the Director of AU Directorate of Admissions. - Special Correspondent

Lifer for murder

ELURU: District First Additional Judge Ch.V. Subba Rao on Friday sentenced Visakha Nagaraju, a health worker at the Primary Health Centre at Koyyalagudem, to undergo life imprisonment for killing his paramour.

According to the prosecution, he doused kerosene on I. Nagamani, 40, a staff nurse at the health centre and set her ablaze. With 60 per cent burns, she died on her way to Guntur Government Hospital in 1998. - Staff Reporter

BJP to launch poll campaign today

HYDERABAD: Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign for Panchayat Raj elections will be launched by its leaders in different parts of the State on Saturday.

According to a press release here on Friday, its State unit president N. Indrasena Reddy will kick off the campaign at Nagaram, Keesara mandal, Ranga Reddy district, while the party national secretaries - B. Dattatreya and K. Hari Babu - will do so at Peddapur village (Medak district) and Gajapathinagaram (Vizianagaram) respectively.

APSFC meet today

TIRUPATI: Andhra Pradesh State Finance Corporation will be conducting an entrepreneur awareness programme-cum-business development campaign at Hotel Bhimas Residency here on Saturday. The meet, targetted at the entrepreneurs of Chittoor, Kadapa, Nellore and Anantapur districts, will be followed by meetings at Vijayawada (June 28), Hyderabad (July 1) and Warangal (July 3). Corporation Chairman J. Rambabu and Managing Director Ajeya Kallam will be taking part in the inaugural meet. -Staff Reporter

`Olympic Run' held

NIZAMABAD: The district Olympic Association in connection with the Olympic Day, on Saturday, conducted Olympic Run from Rajarendra Theatre on Nyalkal Road to the Collectorate grounds. The run was flagged off by Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha. He also participated in the run for a distance holding the Olympic torch. A number of school and college students took part in it.

Tight security for polls

ADILABAD: Adilabad Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela appealed to activists of political parties to help maintain law and order during the Panchayat Raj elections. He told reporters on Friday that adequate bandobust would be provided at polling booths so that people can participate in the polling without fear. The police has recognised 500 villages as sensitive, 262 as hyper sensitive, 29 as faction ridden, 167 as troublesome.

No mobile phones

in polling stations

VIZIANAGARAM: The use of mobile phones at polling stations and also at counting centres by political parties is prohibited, Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann has said. At a review meeting with political parties on Friday, Mr. Mann asked them to cooperate with the police for peaceful conduct of elections. He also restricted the use of vehicles to two in a convoy.

Vehicle passes for electioneering must be obtained from the RTO and for use of mikes permission must be sought from the DSP, he said. - Correspondent

CPI not to support BJP

VIZIANAGARAM: The CPI district committee has said that it will support any party, except BJP, that supports its party candidates in the elections to local bodies. Party district secretary P. Kameswara Rao told a press conference on Friday that as the Congress had ditched them at the last minute on seat-sharing the party on its own fielded candidates for Pachipenta ZPTC and 14 MPTCs in seven mandals in the district.
