New buildings for Govt. schools inaugurated

    SALEM: The State Government has taken up a number of efforts to improve the infrastructure and quality of education in government schools, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has said.

    Inaugurating the new buildings constructed in Government High Schools in Konur, Santhaithanampatti and Kunjandiyur on Friday, he said the new buildings for classrooms and laboratories were constructed with the assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

    The minister said steps were initiated to create necessary facilities and fill up the teaching vacancies in all the schools in the state.

    Students, taking full advantage of the schemes implemented by the state government, should strive hard to score high marks in the examinations and help the district achieve above 90 percentage of pass, he said. Referring to the public demand for the establishment of a Government Arts College in Mettur, he said that the state government would consider it.

    Later, Mr. Arumugam participated in a function organised in Kunjandiyur to distribute loan waiver certificates to the farmers.

    He said the waiver of cooperative crop loans had benefited more than 53 lakh farmers in the state.

    In Salem district, about 1.44 lakh farmers and in Mettur region 24,862 farmers were benefited, Mr. Arumugam said. The minister said that the cooperative banks were issuing fresh crop loans to farmers.

    Out of 120 election promises, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government had fulfilled 60 promises so far, he added. Collector N. Mathivanan presided. Senior officials from various departments were present. Earlier on Thursday, Mr. Arumugam distributed loan waiver certificates to 2,237 farmers at a function in Sankagiri.
