Farmers' rally on July 5

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangham will organise a farmers rally on July 5 either at Vellore or in Chennai to thank the Chief Minister for having waived co-operative crop loans. The State president of the Sangham, M.R. Sivasamy, told reporters here recently that the rally would highlight the demands of the farming community, including compensation for the plantain crops damaged in the recent gusty winds and minimum procurement price of Rs. 1,500 per tonne of sugarcane. It would demand permission for toddy tapping from coconut trees to control the coconut prices..

Stating that the Sangham had been supporting only Government that stood by the farmers by conceding their demands, Dr. Sivasamy said that the Sangham supported the DMK after it promised waiver of crop loans.
