Minister promises to improve hostel conditions

Coimbatore: Minister for Adi-Dravidar Welfare R. Tamilarasi has said that the poor conditions of hostels run for Adi-dravidar and tribal students would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister for getting adequate financial assistance to improve them. She was talking to reporters after reviewing the implementation of Adi-dravidar and tribal welfare schemes in the 11 districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Namakkal, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Thiruvarur, Karur, Erode and Nagapattinam recently.

On the quality of food, Tahsildars in charge of Adi-Dravidar Welfare, District Adi-Dravidar Welfare officers and Collectors have been asked to periodically conduct surprise checks. The Minister also assured to examine a plea for formation of special self-help groups for Adi-Dravidar and tribal people for their economic emancipation. Regarding surrender of funds in some district, the Minister pointed out that funds allocated for acquisition of lands for distribution of house site pattas had proved to be inadequate due to prevailing real estate prices. Such cases would be examined and steps would be taken for allocating sufficient funds. TAHDCO will be distributing 200 autorickshaws each in Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchirapalli districts shortly.
