`Difference between neurology, psychiatry narrowing down'

Workshop on neuropsychiatry organised in Shimoga



PROMOTING SCIENCE: NIMHANS Director D. Nagaraj inaugurating a State-level neuropsychiatric workshop in Shimoga on Saturday.

SHIMOGA: Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS Deemed University, Bangalore, D. Nagaraj said here on Saturday that the difference between neurology and psychiatry, which was quite wide in the 1960s, was getting narrowed down.

Inaugurating a two-day State-level neuropsychiatric workshop-2006 held under the auspices of the Sahyadri Neuropsychiatric Association, Dr. Nagaraj said neurology and psychiatry would be integrated with each other as the result of the research in their respective fields.

He said that with the positive results achieved in the research in different aspects of chemical and genetic reactions and the study of nervous system in both the fields, both the branches of sciences would be integrated into neuropsychiatry.

He said that the installation of the CT scanners in the district and taluk centres helped in analysing the functioning of the brain, as it had made the process of the identification of various parts in the brain easy.

Information

Emphasising the need for disseminating the information on the research of neurology and psychiatry at all levels, Dr. Nagaraj said that the Asean Trust in Bangalore was engaged in this task. He said it had been offering its help to conduct seminars and workshops to promote the interests of neurology and psychiatry.

Managing Director of Nanjappa Trust Hospital D.G. Benakappa and president of the Shimoga branch of the Indian Medical Association D.M. Subhashchandra spoke.

President of the Sahyadri Neuropsychiatric Association K.R. Sridhar presided over the function.

Chairman of the organising committee of the workshop A. Shivaramakrishna welcomed the gathering. Secretary Narayana Panji proposed a vote of thanks.

Scientific sessions on various topics such as paralysis, depression, old age problems were followed by live demonstrations on the latest surgical procedures. Special lectures on different aspects of neurology and psychiatry by experts were also held.
