Environment awareness camp held

Kozhikode: R. Ajayakumar Varma, scientist, Centre for Earth Science Studies, inaugurated an environment awareness camp organised by the Darsanam Samskarika Vedi in association with the Kerala State Science Technology and Environment Council here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ajayakumar said that about 150 countries including India were facing the threat of desertification. Razing of hills and increasing consumption of fuel were factors leading to desertification. However, studies on desertification were conducted only on a minor scale in the country, he said.

M.R. Venugopal, scientist, Remote Sensing Cell, Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, presented a paper on managing drought.

NSS programme officer at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital Cyriac Job and Malabar MediGreen Planters Society president O.P. Prabhakaran Nair spoke.

K.V. Mohammed Kunhi, scientist, KFRI, presented a paper on environment and afforestation and C. Thilakanandan, lecturer, Government Law College, on environment and socio-legal aspects.
