Development works to be over by next year-end

KOZHIKODE: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said on Saturday that the Government was keen on improving the facilities at the Beypore fishing harbour to international standards.

The Minister was speaking at a reception hosted by the Fishing Harbour Development Committee at Beypore for Mr. Sarma and Industries Minister Elamaram Karim.

Mr. Sarma said Beypore harbour development was expected to be completed by December next year.

An amount of Rs.2.74 crores would be spent on the project. Steps to call for tender for the works had been initiated. The work would start within 45 days, he said.

Mr. Karim, in his speech, asked the officials concerned to ensure that the work for development of the harbour progressed as scheduled. He promised the full support of the Government to the harbour development project.

Mr. Sarma said the road leading to the Beypore harbour would be rebuilt and the condition of wharf would be improved. A dispensary would also be set up.

The Minister also promised creation of job opportunities for workers living in the coastal region who would be out of work during the trawling ban period.

Panchayat president K.K. Shailaja and Edathodi Radhakrishnan, member of Kozhikode district panchayat, and representatives of trade unions spoke at the function.

The fishing harbour at Beypore was constructed nearly three decades ago. It was built with facilities to accommodate just 40 fishing boats.

Since then, the rush at the fishing harbour has increased manifold as boats from Neendakara, Puthiappa, Kollam, Ponnani and Kochi frequent the port.

However, there has not been any corresponding increasing in facilities. On the contrary, the condition of the harbour has deteriorated considerably.
