GULBARGA: The drive launched by the Gulbarga City Corporation, along with the city police, to remove encroachments on roads in the busy market area in the city continued for the second day on Saturday. The decision to remove encroachments comes on the second day of Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey taking over as Administrator of the corporation on Thursday. In his first meeting with them, Mr. Pandey directed corporation officials to remove encroachers from government land and roads. Encroachments were removed and illegal constructions demolished win Kirana Bazaar, Kapada Bazaar, Bande Bazaar, Old Vegetable market area and Chappal Bazaar on Friday. The drive continued in the same areas on Saturday. The drive began at Kirana Bazaar opposite Chowk Police Station, with the demolition of illegal constructions put up by shop-owners in front of their shops. One of the shop owners protested against the demolition, but the police continued with their drive. Many shops were demolished at the old vegetable market. Encroachments on the roads, particularly in the busy market area, have been a menace for commuters. Storm water drains were being blocked and this led to collection of rain water and sewage water on the roads during the rainy season. Footpaths have been encroached upon by shop owners. The officials propose to take up construction of the storm water drains in these areas.
