Workshop on evidence in sexual assault cases

MANGALORE: The Department of Forensic Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore, in collaboration with the Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT), Mumbai, will organise a workshop here on Monday to make doctors aware of the technique of examining and reporting sexual assault cases here. Speakers will deal with forensic pathology and evidence collection. A press release here says Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, chairman, Islamic Academy of Education, will inaugurate the workshop.

Resource persons

R.K. Gorea, president of the Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Patiala, will be chief guest. T.S. Kenchappa, Deputy Director, Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Mangalore, and Dr. Gorea will be the resource persons.

Cases of sexual assault on women are increasing in the country. Only in a few cases do victims get justice. According to the National Crime Research Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the accused are convicted in less than 30 per cent of rape cases. CEHAT, Mumbai, has developed a collection kit to be used in sexual assault cases. Amita Pitre and her colleagues from CEHAT will demonstrate the use of the kit.
