BIJAPUR: The Railway safety department has given the green signal to the new broadgauge line between Bijapur and Telgi (Basavanabagewadi). A team of engineers from the department have carried out several quality checks, including a trial run of a goods train, on the new track. All safety requirements have been met, sources in the South Western Railway (SWR) told The Hindu . With this, almost 50 per cent of the proposed 300-km broad gauge railway line from Sholapur to Gadag is ready. Over 100 km of narrow-gauge line between Sholapur and Bijapur line was converted into broadgauge in 1998, and trains have been run on the route.
Permission unlikely
However, according to sources, the Railway Board is unlikely to give permission to extend the Sholapur-Bijapur services up to Telgi immediately. Train services may start only after the commissioning of the broadgauge line up to Bagalkot.
