VIJAYAWADA: Reward came from an unexpected quarter to two constables working in the Traffic-II police station on Saturday for saving a life by responding immediately to an emergency. Tummala Babu Rao, permanent way inspector in the railways, witnessed the constables rescuing a road accident victim and presented Rs. 500 each to them in the presence of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) T. Prabhakara Babu. Mr. Babu announced that he had recommended their names to the Police Commissioner for a departmental reward also.
The incident
T. Srinivasa Rao, a constable on traffic duty, was posted at Raghavayya Park traffic junction to regulate the traffic on June 15. Around 10 a.m., vehicular traffic from Governorpet to Benz Circle came to a halt when the traffic signal showed red light. A speeding car from Governorpet hit a stationary motorcycle from behind. The pillion rider, a woman, fell down from the motorcycle, while the man driving it was dragged by the car to a distance. Though the car was stopped, the man could not come out as he was stuck between the car and the road. Mr. Srinivasa Rao, from his handset, contacted the police control room and asked them to send an ambulance. He also sought the help of Ch. P. Chakravarthy, a constable posted at Fire Station traffic junction. The two constables lifted the car with their hands and pulled the man out and rushed him to a hospital. Impressed with the commitment of the police constables, Mr. Babu Rao approached Police Commissioner Umesh Sharraf to present the reward to the constables. "Instead of wasting time by consulting their higher-ups and waiting for their orders, the two constables rescued the victim. None of the citizens at the traffic junction helped them lift the car," Mr. Babu Rao said. Though the police tried to get the details of the victim, they could not trace them, as he did not lodge a complaint against the car driver.
