MYSORE: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat has chalked out a programme to hold Kannada cultural jathas in all the 52 border taluks of the State from November 2006 to November 2007 as part of the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Chandrashekar Patil, or Champa, said the jathas involving Kannada litterateurs from the border taluks would help create awareness about Kannada culture among the people residing in the border areas of the State.

The yearlong programme would conclude with a conference in Bangalore in November 2007. "A proposal in the regard has already been sent to the State Government," Dr. Patil said.

The 73rd Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held in Shimoga in December this year, he said. The executive committee of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat will meet in Bangalore within the next 15 days and finalise the name of the Kannada litterateur who will be the president of the sammelan.

Dr. Patil said the first Kannada Ganaka (computer) Conference would be held in Bangalore shortly to elicit opinion on popularising the use of Kannada in computers.

The parishat has decided to hold the annual Children's Kannada Literary Conference in Bagalkot on July 21, 22 and 23 this year.

A training workshop for authors of Kannada children's books will also be held on the occasion.

The State-level Women's Kannada Conference this year will be held in Mangalore. The Kannada Bandaya Sahitya Sammelan will be held in Mysore.

Dr. Patil appealed to the State Government to put off a decision on teaching English as a language from the first standard in government primary schools until the Karnataka High Court disposed of a writ petition on the subject.
