KOLLAM: The Environment and Human Rights Protection Coordination Council has demanded a Vigilance probe into the mining permits issued by the District Mining and Geology office. Activists of the council will organise a demonstration in front of the Mining and Geology office on June 28 to press their demands. In a statement, council chairman R. Gangaprasad and general convener Odanavattom Vijayaprakash said that mining under the Mining and Geology office permits carried out at Poruvazhi for bauxite, West Kallada for sand, Maruthimala for granite and Velichikala for clay was creating serious environmental problems in the respective areas. The council leaders alleged that while granting the permits, the office was not concerned about the rules and regulations. Mining permits were being granted to the `mafia,' they alleged.
