PONDICHERRY: A new private school, which follows the CBSE syllabus, was opened at Kalapet near here on Saturday. Admissions to pre-school, and first and second standards are on at `The Study', which is managed by the Dr. K.M. Cherian Educational Society. "Classes will start from July 3. The school will join the CBSE stream from the sixth standard. At the lower levels it will follow the Montessori system, incorporating the CBSE pattern of education," Priya Gopal, coordinator for The Study, said. The school, sitting on a 25-acre campus, will have among other facilities a 30-foot aquarium and a place to house domestic animals. Lt. Governor M.M. Lakhera inaugurated the school. Dr K.M. Cherian, founder of the society, said 10 per cent of the seats would be reserved for the local villagers, predominantly from the fishermen community. "They would be given free basic education and nutritious food at the school," he added. A clinical psychologist would evaluate the child and counsel the parents of the child regularly. The students would also be made to undergo periodic health check up, he added. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shajahan said that the Government encouraged private parties to start education institutions. It was making efforts to make the territory an `educational hub'.
