DAVANGERE: A rapid response team of doctors has been constituted to treat people affected by chikungunya, which is spreading all over the district.

The doctors will rush to places where fresh cases of the viral disease are reported and offer treatment. They will also create awareness among people about the precautionary measures to be taken against spread of the disease.

District Health Officer K.R. Jayadevappa told reporters here on Saturday that the team comprised doctors, house surgeons from JJM Medical College and Health department officials. District-level officials will function as the nodal authorities of the team.

The team has visited Harihar, Honnali, Harpanahalli and Chennaigiri taluks of the district, and provided treatment to patients. Similar teams had been constituted at the taluk level to coordinate with the rapid response team, he said.

JJM Medical College, which has come forward to assist the Health department, has said that it will provide some more doctors in the next few days.

Dr. Jayadevappa said that 27,819 people had been affected by the disease in the district, and its incidence was more in Harpanahalli taluk. More people were affected after the brief spell of rain a few days ago. To a question, he said that there was no dearth of medicines to treat chikungunya. Adequate quantity of medicines had been supplied to all taluk hospitals, he said.

    Mosquito control

Dr. Jayadevappa said that effective control of the vector (mosquito) could help fight the disease. People had been told to maintain hygiene and cleanliness to help control breeding of mosquitoes, he said.

Spread of the disease had affected attendance in government offices, schools and colleges, he said.
