BJP against legalising "public loot"

Special Correspondent

Party will move court if office-of-profit Bill is not changed

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party would not hesitate to move court if the Government pushes ahead to pass the bill related to the office of profit without any changes, according to the party's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, Sushma Swaraj.

She said the party was against legalising "public loot." The Government should not stand on prestige but try and build a consensus by bringing in legislation that would clearly define an office of profit. The definition should not be ambiguous.

Talking to reporters after a meeting of the party's legal cell where the matter was discussed, Ms. Swaraj said past mistakes could be rectified by allowing MPs and MLAs holding offices of profit to resign from those offices while protecting them against disqualification.

But for the future, an office of profit should be clearly defined, she added.
