NALCO staff strike against disinvestment move

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Production of alumina at the refinery of National Aluminium Company (NALCO) at Damanjodi in Orissa's Koraput district stopped on Saturday with the workers going on a 24 hour-strike. The workers were opposing the Centre's decision to sell 10 per cent equity in the company. Mining operation at the nearby bauxite mines of the company was also affected as the workers joined the strike and staged a demonstration demanding the withdrawal of the decision. NALCO workers at the company's smelter plant at Angul observed a day's strike on Friday to register their protest against the disinvestments move. However, work in the smelter resumed on Saturday even as the agitating employees staged a demonstration inside the plant premises. Meanwhile, the workers of the ruling Biju Janata Dal staged a demonstration outside the NALCO corporate office in Bhubaneswar and urged the Centre to reconsider the decision.
