KOCHI: An overwhelming response from students marked the Kochi edition of the Pre-Counselling Guidance Programme for Professional Courses organised by The Hindu-Educationplus at the Toc-H School auditorium here on Saturday. About 500 students who turned up for the programme lapped up every word uttered by experts. From Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) to various professional courses available in the State, the students and their parents received loads of information from the experts. This is the second in a series of three pre-counselling guidance programmes being organised by The Hindu-Educationplus in association with the State Bank of Travancore (SBT). The first programme was held in Kozhikode on Thursday. The third will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Elaborating on several aspects related to this year's CAP, Joint Commissioner for Entrance Examinations S. Rajoo Krishnan urged the student community to assess their skills before selecting a course. "Don't get worried over what will happen at the allotment venue. We will be there to help you. Please feel free to interact with the officials appointed at the venue of CAP to clear your doubts".
Nuances of CAP
Explaining the nuances of the allotment process, Dr. Krishnan told the students to report at the CAP venue at least 30 minutes before the allotted time. "It's a rare occasion in your life. Report at the venue with all necessary documents. The CAP is being organised to simplify the admission process," he said. The Joint Commissioner did not confirm whether this year's CAP would be held as per the original schedule, but told students and parents to regularly visit the website of the Office of the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (www.cee-kerala.org) for the latest news. He told them to keep track of newspapers to know the exact date on which CAP will be held. Senior Medical Administrator of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences S.K. Ramachandran Nair, who was the counsellor for medical courses, highlighted the challenges before a medical student. "Medicine is a highly dependent profession. If you are a person who would not like to interact with people, medicine is not meant for you. The satisfaction of being able to relieve the pain of a patient will remain the essence of doctoring," he added. Urging the students to work hard, Dr. Ramachandran Nair said that people come to a doctor with their problems. "They do not come with answers. Identify the problems and win their trust. Nobody has the privilege of knowing man so intimately at times of such great personal moment," he said.
Overview of courses
Presenting an overview of the engineering courses, Course Director of TIME Ajay Antony urged the students to analyse the market value of various courses before taking a final decision. "The best course is best defined in terms of employability. Students have to check whether the course selected would provide them with a job through campus recruitment," he said. Stressing the need to focus on courses they prefer to learn, Mr. Antony told the students not to end up selecting the wrong course. He urged them to start preparing for attaining success in campus recruitment right from day one in an engineering college. Giving tips on how to make the right choice while selecting a college for study, M. Madhavan, Principal, SCMS College of Engineering and Technology, Karukutty, said a student should evaluate an institution by its academic ambience, infrastructure and resources. "Competence of the faculty and leadership quality and responsiveness of the management, quality of student input, placement services and reputation of the institution are also important factors," he added. Professor Madhavan told the students to develop regular study habits to secure a dream job before passing out of the campus. He advised them to maintain consistency in academic records during the four years on the campus. V.P. Bhaskaran, Assistant General Manager, Zonal Office, SBT, made a presentation on the various educational loan schemes for students opting for professional courses and higher studies. The participants were treated to snacks supplied by Craze Biscuits.
