78.60 p.c. polling

in Mahe civic poll

MAHE: Elections to the municipal council held here on Saturday recorded 78.60 per cent polling. Polling was peaceful. Election officials said that 21,236 voters cast their votes to elect the chairman of the municipality and councillors from the 15 wards here. Total electorate in the voters list was 27,018. Four candidates were in the race for chairmanship and 50 others were seeking election to the municipal council. — Staff Reporter

Houses destroyed

in rain

ALAPPUZHA: As many as 25 houses were completely destroyed and 377 partially damaged in heavy rain and sea erosion in the district on Saturday. A release said 10 relief camps had been opened in the district for the affected. The Arattupuzha panchayat and the Ambalappuzha South panchayat were worst affected by sea erosion. As many as 15 houses were completely destroyed in sea erosion. An official release said the total loss in rain and sea erosion in the district was Rs.17 lakhs. — Staff Reporter

Minister's directive to District Collectors

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has directed the District Collectors to take emergency relief measures, including the shifting of people now that the monsoon has regained strength. He asked the constituency level committees with the MLAs as chairmen and Tahsildars as conveners to meet immediately and initiate the relief work. — Special Correspondent

Withdraws agitation

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Sadhu Jana Vimochana Samyukta Vedi has decided to withdraw the ongoing agitation seeking five acres of agriculture land each for landless Scheduled Caste families and Rs.50,000 in cash towards their rehabilitation following the talks between Vedi leaders and Additional District Magistrate (ADM) B. Mohanan at the Collectorate conference hall on Saturday evening. Nearly 500 families of Vedi supporters encroached upon the Chandanappally rubber estate of the State Plantation Corporation at Vakayar-Elappupara, near Konni, on Tuesday night to press their demands. — Staff Reporter

LLB rank list published

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The provisional rank list of candidates who have appeared for the entrance examination for admission to the five-year LLB course-2006 held on June 10 has been published, said a press note issued by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) here on Saturday. The first rank goes to V.S. Prathesh. The rank list will be available at the office of the CEE and can be accessed on the website `cee-kerala.org'. — Staff Reporter

Post declared vacant

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Election Commission (SEC) has declared the post of chairperson of the Palakkad municipality as vacant. This follows the failure of A.K. Chandrankutty who was elected to the post to take charge. Even though Mr. Chandrankutty was elected on May 24, he did not take charge till June 9, which was the time allowed for the purpose.

MGU B.Com. results

KOTTAYAM: Mahatma Gandhi University has published the results of the final year B.Com. examinations held during March 2006.

Bini Maria Elias of K.G. College, Pampady, who scored 1,294 marks is the topper. Dona Mathew of Baselius College, Kottayam, who scored 1,279 came second, while Pinky Abraham of Bharatha Matha College, Thrikkakara, came third with 1,271 marks, a university press note said. `Do not upset reservation'

KOTTAYAM: Noted educationalist, N.A. Karim has stressed the need for fostering a broad and organised movement against the attempt on the part of the ruling class to upset communal reservation.

Speaking at a convention organised by the `Samvarana samrakshana samithy' (Reservation Protection Committee) here on Saturday, Mr. Karim pointed out that even after six decades of independence the rulers have not been able to implement reservation in toto. — Staff Reporter

Environment awareness camp held

Kozhikode: R. Ajayakumar Varma, scientist, Centre for Earth Science Studies, inaugurated an environment awareness camp organised by the Darsanam Samskarika Vedi in association with the Kerala State Science Technology and Environment Council here on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ajayakumar said that about 150 countries including India were facing the threat of desertification. Razing of hills and increasing consumption of fuel were factors leading to desertification. However, studies on desertification were conducted only on a minor scale in the country, he said. — Staff Reporter

Monsoon-hit shifted to relief camps

KOLLAM: Many families living along the coastline from Chavara to Karunagapally had to be shifted to relief camps during the past two days since the sea began turning rough. At Ponmana in Chavara eight houses were partially destroyed by the waves on Friday night. The compound wall of the Kattil Mekathil Devi Temple there was also washed away. Forty families in this area were shifted to a relief camp opened at an LP school a safe distance away. In Karunagapally taluk, 322 families living close to the sea have been shifted to various relief camps. — Staff Reporter

Lecture on criminal law

PATHANAMTHITTA: The former Supreme Court judge K.T. Thomas delivered the keynote address on `Emerging trends in criminal law,' organised by the Pathanamthitta Bar Association here on Saturday afternoon. R. Basant of the Kerala High Court inaugurated the meeting presided over by Bar Association president K.S. Sivakumar. District Sessions Judge E. Mytheenkunju; association secretary S. Manoj; and treasurer K.G. Suresh also spoke. — Staff Reporter

MGU B.Com. results published

KOTTAYAM: Mahatma Gandhi University has published the results of the final year B.Com. examinations held during March 2006. The pass percentage has registered an increase from 37.91 last year to 48.7 this year. The percentage of pass among regular students is 81.63 while the private candidates have a pass percentage of 32.66. Bini Maria Elias of K.G. College, Pampady, who scored 1,294 marks is the topper. Dona Mathew of Baselius College, Kottayam, who scored 1,279 came second, while Pinky Abraham of Bharatha Matha College, Thrikkakara, came third with 1,271 marks, a university press note said.
