VIJAYAWADA: As the campaign for the June 28 election to Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) in the district gained momentum, leaders of the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) stepped up their attack on the Government's policies to attract the attention of voters. TDP leaders say the ruling Congress has done nothing for farmers and rural women in the last two years except "whiling away time by harping on irrigation projects." TDP district president Ambati Brahmanaiah, who campaigned in Nagayalanka and Avanigadda mandals on Saturday, took a dig at the Congress for letting down farmers by not ensuring remunerative price to various agricultural produce. "Congress leaders are only talking about irrigation projects. Why are they silent on remunerative price? Paddy farmers are forced to sell their produce at Rs. 80 less than the minimum support price per bag," he remarked.
Price rise
TDP urban president Gadde Rammohan campaigned widely in Kankipadu, Penamaluru and Vijayawada rural mandals. He said the Congress had betrayed people on various counts and DWCRA women were waiting for an opportunity to teach the ruling party a lesson for not giving them loans at the promised 3 per cent rate of interest. "Rise of prices of essential commodities has hit people very hard. There is no reason why people should favour ruling party candidates in this election. From women's loans to agricultural prices, the Government has failed in every respect," he maintained.
Focus on farmers
TDP district general secretary and Nandigama MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao found fault with the Government for not addressing the problems of rural poor. He campaigned in Kanchikacharla and Nandigama mandals. TDP candidate for ZP chairman's post Kagita Venkata Rao participated in a hectic campaign in Bantumilli, Gudur, Krithivennu, Mudinepalli and Machilipatnam areas. Mr. Rao focused his campaign on farmers' issues, besides lambasting the Government for not giving scholarships to BC students, who faced hardship in continuing their education.
