KHAMMAM: A total of 155 candidates are in the fray after the withdrawal of nominations for the 46 ZPTCs in Khammam district, according to Collector Sashibushan. Addressing a news conference on Saturday, he said that the Singareni Mandal had the highest number of as many as 1,585 candidates were in the contest for the 606 MPTCs. Eight MPTCs were unanimously elected of which three went in favour of the CPI (M) and two independents while the Congress, TDP and CPI shared one each. It will be a straight contest in seven ZPTCS -- Kallur, Penuballi, Sathupalli, Julurpadu and Kothagudem, Aswaraopet and Wajeedu -- where only two candidates each were left in the fray. He explained that 34 contestants were fielded by the Congress, 23 each by the TDP and CPI (M), 11 by CPI, five by BJP and seven by BSP while 48 are independents. He explained that 1,880 polling station would be set up for the polls. Khammam (urban) mandal would have the highest number of 97 polling stations and the Velerpadu mandal accounted for the lowest of 16 polling stations.
