Road safety given a go-by

Gravel dumped along the road posing threat to the general public

ROAD BLOCKS: Gravel dumped along the margins of the busy four-lane Grand National Trunk road for land-filling near CRR Public School in Eluru.

ELURU: The heaps of gravel dumped along the Grand Nation Trunk Road from TTD Kalyanamandapam to the police guesthouse as part of executing outfall drain works is a case in point for the utter disregard for road safety on the part of Eluru Municipal Corporation authorities.

As the one side of the four-lane road is eclipsed by the gravel heaps, the traffic goes haywire particularly during office and school hours. Sir C.R. Reddy Public School and C.R.Reddy College and the bungalows of the Collector and Superintendent of Police are located within the particular stretch of the road from Satrampadu to the Kalyanamandapam proposed for the drainage works with a cost of Rs. 31 lakhs. Levelling of the road margins after completing drainage works forms part of the proposal and the contractor, entrusted with the works, reportedly dumped the gravel along the road for the purpose.

Major roadblocks

The gravel heaps turned out to be major roadblocks, exposing the school children to the risk of accidents and hindering free movement of traffic on the busy road.

The road gets choked in the peak hours with frequent traffic bottlenecks due to the movement of a large number of auto rickshaws and rickshaws, carrying school children, two-wheelers and RTC buses.
